Get Stuff Done
Here are three things You Should Know as you head into the Canada Day long weekend:
1. $1 Million on the line: that’s what Canaccord Genuity’s Markus Muhs, based here in Edmonton, tells me is on the August 14th Edmonton Rotary Million Dollar Hole-in-One golf tournament. Huge kudos to Markus and his Rotary Club as well as everyone involved in this tournament. Proceeds are going towards the Lurana Shelter, a first-stage, emergency shelter for women and children, providing safe, secure refuge and emergency services such as meals, clothing, personal care items, transportation, and child support, as well as services related to advocacy, and staffing 24/7 for support and security. One-on-one counselling is provided in partnership with a community agency. Markus tells me that the foursomes will be sold-out shortly - so if you’re in the City of Champions (that’s Edmonton, for our Calgary friends), on Aug 14th and can make this tournament, you might want to register now.
2. Longest Drive contest: Remember Jeff Hunter of Canaccord Genuity in Calgary? We highlighted how Jeff was entered into World Long Drive Regional Event in La Salle, Colorado June 9-11. Below is a picture of Jeff being greeted by his wife and daughter upon his return, with a sign showing how he did.
Here’s what Jeff had to say about his outing: “It was an absolute blast and learned a lot about what I need to do for training going forward. I had a top drive of 395 yards and made it to round 10 in double knock out regional qualifier for the televised year end Championship – there were 12 rounds total.
“The second day was the Pro Cash event which was a huge learning experience. In my group, there was Justin James, (world number 3 and previous World Champion) and Seb Twadell, the current world record holder for ball speed which is about 50miles per hour (or 26%) faster than Rory McIlroy’s. We didn’t end up having the conditions for the illustrious 500 yard drive but Bryce Verplank was able to poke one out there 489 yards and Kyle Berkshire hit one 480 so it was pretty incredible nevertheless.
“I still have a lot mentally to learn and need to focus on building my body and changing my swing for long drive. I still have a very traditional golf swing which is great for flighting and working the ball so there’s a lot to head home with and improve upon.”
3. Get Stuff Done - here is some great career advice from former US president Barack Obama that resonates with me and reflects a poster I have in my office:
